Concentric Zone Model: Ernest Burgess

Concentric Zone Model: Ernest Burgess

The Concentric Zone Model was proposed by Ernest Burgess. He was the student and colleague of Prof.Robert E Park.
Ernest Watson Burgess was born on May 16, 1886. He was a Canadian-American urban sociologist born in Ontario, Canada. He was educated at Kingfisher College in Oklahoma and continued graduate studies in sociology at the University of Chicago.
In 1916, he became a faculty member at the University of Chicago.
Burgess also served as the 24th President of the American Sociological Association (ASA).
He died on   – December 27, 1966.
Introduction to the Science of Sociology (Park & Burgess, 1921) one of the most influential texts of his times.
Many people at the time referred to this book as the "Bible of Sociology"

Ernest W Burgess suggested that a city develop somewhat the way a tree does growing out words in a series of concentric rings or zones over time.
He wrote the book “The City” in 1925 along with Park and McKenzie.
He made the the city of Chicago itself as the laboratory.

 The city: Chicago

Although Burgess assumed that economic competition was Central to urban life he like Robert Park saw other social factors at work. Moving to a suburb for example is not just an economic consideration it also confessed prestige suggesting that people have made it.

The Concentric model was based upon the process of invasion and succession.

Invasion refers to the inflow of rural population towards the City Centre for various purposes like employment.

Succession means a process that shows successive movement of people in outward zones as the need arises.

Succession is a complementary process because it occurs only after invention in cities there is always competition for Limited space.

Burgess illustrated his model by applying it is directly to the city of Chicago of his time.

He Proposed 5 rings of Development.
  1. CBD: Central Business Deport
  2. Zone of transition
  3. Zone of working men’s home
  4. Residential Home
  5. Commuters Zone
